Circumcision in infants is performed by removing the foreskin on the penis. It is performed as soon as the baby is born and during the hospital stay of the mother and the child. Prior consent is taken by the hospital authorities and the doctors to perform the circumcision on the baby. Usually it is performed by the parent’s choice. |
The main reason most parents opt for circumcision as soon as the baby is born because it is much more painful once the baby grows older. However, opinions are changing now because many parents think that removing the foreskin is not absolutely necessary and they can let the baby grow and leave the choice up to him when he becomes older.
Besides religious beliefs, one of the main reasons for infant circumcision is that many people think that leaving the foreskin could cause infections in the child. Foreskin can cause some genital infections and in adults it increases the risk of sexually transmitted diseases.
So, how infant circumcision is performed? In infants, the process of circumcision taken under 15 minutes and also it is performed by applying local anesthetics to the circumcised area. After removal of the skin using a ring called plastibell the doctor will apply a lot of petroleum jelly on the area for the recovery. Parents should guard against any possible infection and also should keep that area as dry as possible. The plastibell would remain on the circumcised part and will fall of on its own after one week or 10 days of operation. The first few days of the operation the circumcised area can look red and sore and it will stay that way until it heals. That is why until the wound completely heals, parents should take extra care to keep the area dry and clean.
