Circumcision is also performed on women and it has several names like female genital cutting or FGC and female genital mutilation or FGM. This procedure involves cutting of female genitals partially or completely, namely the clitoris. The reasons for removal can be cultural or religious and most of the times it is done with the consent of the patients or self consent. The procedure is called labioplasty or vaginoplasty. |
This procedure is much different from the procedure used in change of genitals. Circumcision for women is used in remote countries and underdeveloped countries where this procedure is mostly a part of a ritual. The most number of circumcisions are performed in Africa and they are always done without anesthesia and in unhygienic conditions.
Women who have undergone circumcision in Egypt or Africa support it by saying it was a religious issue and also more hygienic. Women circumcise their daughters at a very young age and may be in infancy. However, the effect of circumcision in women has not been studied and whether it is really hygienic or not is still to be discovered by doctors. Women belonging to tribal Africa and other places where the tradition is followed and are living in some other country still follow this ritual and there have been some cases of surgical circumcision in the United States with the consent of the patient. Most of the circumcisions are performed using scalpel and also under the effect of general anesthesia. The surgery is performed to the labia minor and extreme circumcisions are rarely performed for women anywhere in the world.
It is believed that circumcision in women reduces their sexual drive and this ensures that the women are virgins on their wedding night, which is a highly valuable commodity in several African and Asian countries. However, circumcision harm to women is mostly psychologically as they are unable to enjoy normal sexual relationships. They do not experience the joy of arousal and this makes them feel inadequate. And if they have suffered from an infection during the surgical procedure, it could render them completely infertile, incapable of experiencing the joys of motherhood.
