Mental health has long been treated with the help of anti-depressants. However, now new medications known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are being constantly used to treat depressed people. While these anti-depressants have helped millions of people all over the world, one should be careful as their side effects can lead to sexual issues like sexual dysfunction. |
Anti-depressants like Prozac and Zoloft are taken by around 30 percent to 60 percent people. And, doctors pay very little attention to sexual issues in mental health believing that the issues will resolve themselves once the mental health is treated. However, many people end up suffering from drug-related sexual issues like erectile dysfunction, ejaculation problems, vaginal dryness, delayed orgasm and decreased libido. These are issues that need to be address by mental health doctors when treating the patients.
However, when it comes to sexual issues in mental health, many people would like their mental health to first get better and do not care so much about the sexual issues. This could be the reason why doctors do not give sexual issues priority. However, it is a known fact that having fulfilling sexual relationship increases the quality of life. Therefore, both issues can be addressed simultaneously.
In most people, once they are off the anti-depressant, sexual functioning invariably returns to normal. However, this may not be the case with chronic patients, who would be required to take treatment for years together. In these patients, the doctors have to rethink the treatment so that both issues are addressed without one causing the other.
