In sudden hearing loss, your hearing is reduced by more than 30 decibels over a minimum of three continuous frequencies and this hearing loss occurs over 72 hours or less. Sudden hearing loss is seen more often in people between the age of 30 years and 60 years and it tends to affect both males and females equally. Although the name is sudden hearing loss, the loss occurs over few hours.

The treatment for sudden hearing loss depends on the cause of the loss. Sometimes, the hearing loss just corrects itself as in the case of viral infection but occasionally you may have to seek medical intervention in the form of surgery to resolve the problem. Often people who have ear infections are treated with high dose of steroids to get rid of the problem and this can restore the hearing. However, if your hearing loss is permanent, then you will have to use a hearing aid or opt for a cochlear transplant. Your doctor would be the best person to advice you on the type of treatment that is best suited for your sudden hearing loss.
