Conductive hearing loss occurs when sounds from the outside cannot reach the inner ear. This is usually due to blockage that can occur in the outer or middle ear because of ear infection or ear wax. Sometimes conductive hearing loss can occur due to abnormality of the structure of the ear or due to the eardrum rupturing. |
Sometimes people have excess bone in the middle ear and this condition is known as otosclerosis. When a person has otosclerosis, he can suffer from severe conductive hearing loss as the excess bone prevents sounds from entering into the inner ear. Although the person does suffer hearing loss, the sounds become quiet rather than distorted.
Depending on the cause, conductive hearing loss can be temporary or permanent. For temporary conductive hearing loss, there are treatments that can help the person regain normal hearing.
