Managing Chronic Illness In The Elderly

Chronic illness is a group of diseases which just may take longer to heal or sometimes an underlying condition and a complete healing may not be possible. Some examples of chronic illnesses are cancer, diabetes, asthma and arthritis.

Those suffering from chronic illness may feel irritated, frustrated or depressed due to the state of their health. Added to the fact if they are also elderly, then the state of the patient may be just worse. There are a few tips available to help managing chronic illness in the elderly.

Firstly one needs to take care of proper nutrition of the patient. Even if the patient is in a state where he has absolutely no appetite, one must still try to feed him little portions of healthy things such as vegetables, fruits and fresh fruit juices.

One could also encourage the patient to take part in activities such as yoga, meditation and music. These activities provide a stress free and a peaceful mind to the patient. The patient and the people around him should maintain a positive attitude, and in turn help the patient adjust to his illness and the lifestyle related to it. The patients should also try to keep stress at the minimum. If possible the patient can delegate the daily chores to others and relax. One can also try to socialize and build a support network comprising of other people suffering from such illness.

With a proper frame of mind, support from friends and family, it is not difficult even for the elderly to deal with chronic illness. It is just a matter of thinking positive and compliance with the doctor's instructions.
