Abnormal Psychology Of Fatal Attraction

Fatal Attraction, the movie, was released in 1987 and it went on to become a box office success. However, today the movie has found its way into the realms of abnormal psychology and is much quoted when discussion mental illness and disorders.

The abnormal psychology of Fatal Attraction is clear and one of the main protagonists of the movie played by actress Glenn Close displays all the classic characteristics of borderline personality disorder. This character displays characteristics like fear of abandonment, impulsivity, suicidal tendencies, extreme anger, instability and incapable of having a stable interpersonal relationship. Although the ending of the movie is unnatural and artificial, it still manages to give great insights into abnormal psychology and borderline personality disorder.

Borderline personality disorder is a psychiatric condition where a person shows prolonged disturbance of personality function. The person suffers from instability of mood, thinking, self-image, identity and behavior. In extreme cases, the person can also suffer from periods of dissociation brought on by disturbance in the sense of self. All these disturbances and instabilities have a highly negative impact on the psychosocial aspect of the person's life.

Most of the symptoms appear either during adolescence or early adulthood and can persist for many years. However, most symptoms reduce in severity over a period of time and some people recover completely. Borderline personality disorder needs to be treated with psychotherapy and medication.

There are many causes of borderline personality disorder and one finding suggests that a history of childhood trauma can induce it. However, researchers have also found that genetic predisposition, neurobiological causes, brain abnormalities and environmental factors can result in this disorder.
