Flying During Third Trimester

Flying has become a part and parcel of our lives. But what about flying during the third trimester? Even though it is safe to fly during first half of your third trimester, air travel at the end of the third trimester of pregnancy poses risk to you as well as your baby.

Many airlines will not allow you to board the plane if you are in the latter half of third trimester of pregnancy unless you provide a doctor's certificate.

In certain high-risk cases, your health care provider may advice you to avoid flying; particularly if you are carrying twins or triplets, have high blood pressure or have placental abnormalities.

Even though you have an uncomplicated pregnancy, it is best to avoid flying towards the end of your third trimester. The fact that airlines do not allow women to fly during third trimester is to avoid mid-flight deliveries as neither the air stewards nor the air hostess have the necessary experience and emergency equipment to cope with this situation. However, each airline has different rules and regulations about when and whether it will allow you to fly.

Flying during third trimester of pregnancy may increase your blood pressure and your baby may have trouble in pressurized cabin of plane. Apart from this there is an increase risk of miscarriage and/or abnormalities in the unborn baby due to exposure to natural radiation. If you have history of blood clots or you are under observation for preterm labor, the smart choice is to put off your travel till you deliver.
