Loss Of Appetite In Second Trimester Of Pregnancy

The second trimester is an important phase in women’s pregnancy. The woman's body during this phase starts preparing for the growing fetus.

Morning sickness and loss of appetite are some of the symptoms that may occur during second trimester of pregnancy. During the second trimester there is general slowdown in digestive system due to the pressure exerted by the uterus on the lower bowel. As a result loss of appetite and constipation are some of the side effects seen during second trimester.

Constipation and loss of appetite may occur throughout the pregnancy, but it worsens during the second trimester of pregnancy. A number of factors may contribute to loss of appetite during second trimester, including an increase in the progesterone, a steroid hormone produced in the ovary which slows down the entire process of digestion. Besides this, additional pressure on the lower bowel and increased absorption of water by the colon also slowdown the process of digestion. Increased amount of iron intake during pregnancy causes constipation as a result the mother's desire to eat food decreases.

Pregnant women may benefit from drinking eight to ten glasses of water every day and eating fiber-rich food such as fruits and leafy green vegetables. If possible, divide the meals into five or six small meals instead of having two big meals. Avoid fatty foods or foods that are hard to digest. Apart from this, before taking certain medication and iron tablets always consult your health care provider because certain medication may upset your stomach and consequently your desire for food will decrease.
