Breast Feeding After Implant

There are some potential problems of breast feeding after implants. After going through a breast augmentation procedure, the nipples become very sensitive and even breast feeding might seem very painful. In a normal woman, after delivering the baby the breasts become engorged with milk.

However, when the same thing happens to a woman who has had breast implants, she may have more intense effects along with engorged breasts. This includes effects like fever and chills when the woman delivers the baby. It is possible that the breasts might produce less milk than normal if the silicon implants interfere with the milk producing glands.

Breast feeding also depends on the method of surgery undertaken while breast augmentation. The usual method followed is by making a small incision and planting the silicon implants. However, if the incision was made around the areola and if nerves were cut during the procedure it could interfere with your ability to breast feed. There are also other concerns among women who have implants. Some want to know whether silicon from the implants get mixed into the breast milk. There is no evidence of this occurring and also it is harmless to the baby if it should happen. It is harmless because silicon is similar to a substance that is used to treat stomach upsets in babies.

In case the mother is unable to feed the baby breast milk, she should discuss it with her doctor so that additional formula is given to the baby or alternate ways to express breast milk is planned.
