Burning Pain At Nape Of Neck

The neck and shoulders contain muscles, bones, nerves, arteries and veins as well as many ligaments and supporting structures. Most of the pains in the neck are the outcome of old injuries to these muscles and ligaments, while some might be due to a broken collarbone or broken shoulder blade.

A bursa is a sac over the joints that provide a cushion to the joints and muscles. These can become swollen and painful after an injury. Some other causes include whiplash injury, tendonitis or gallbladder disease.

The result could be a sharp, burning, crampy, shock-like or stabbing pain. Such pain in the neck can also result in weakness, numbness, swelling or a deformity in extreme cases. If the pain worsen, it is important to call the doctor or rush to the hospital. For milder cases, basic home care measures are adequate. In many cases, strains and bruises heal themselves and do not require a doctor’s visit. But if the pain is severe and worsening, leading to numbness, swelling or deformity it needs to be checked.

Some of the self care remedies include rest. It is important to use the injured area as little as possible for a few days, and then slowly begin to exercise. You can also use ice in a plastic bag, wrap the bag with a towel and then apply it to the injured area for 15-20 minutes. Applying ice directly to the skin can damage the skin. Elevation of the injured area helps the swelling go down. This also reduces the pain.
