This type of pain is called the referred pain because the hip join and the knee joint share a common nerve.

The common conditions producing hip joint pain include:

• Osteoarthritis, also called arthritis, is a common cause of hip pain. Under this condition the hip joint becomes painful because the cartilage is eroded, which causes the bone to rub against bone producing pain.
• Infective arthritis is a condition that can be best described as an infection of the hip joint and comes on suddenly presenting acute arthritis. This is characterized by fever and severe pain in the hip.
• Chronic infective arthritis usually occurs when there a delay in the treatment of an acute or sub acute arthritis, which destroys the cartilage and bones. This can lead to a permanent disability and is one of the common causes of hip joint pain in children.
• Avascular necrosis of femoral head, where the head of the femur loses its blood supply. This results in death of the bone tissue in the area. This dead bone is weak and collapses gradually when the join becomes painful.
• Fracture neck femur, an osteoporotic fracture also causes hip pain.
