After a gastric bypass surgery, most people are put on a liquid diet only kind of a meal plan for at least 3 weeks. It is only after this three week period can they advance to a more substantial meal plan like soft food. Then the food is gradually changed over the following weeks to solids and this time period takes about 9 months after the surgery. |
However, remember that you can start soft foods only after a clinical visit after three weeks and if the doctor says it is okay. The nutritionist typically explains what soft foods are and what types of foods you can have while on the diet plan. You will not be shifted to complete soft foods from liquids at one go. The transition is again gradually where soft foods are added to your diet plan week by week.
Typically the soft foods will be focused on high protein and carbohydrates. Sugars and fats are cut down. The protein in the diet makes sure that your nutrition is taken care of on a daily basis. Additionally, the doctor also suggests some multivitamins during this stage. Some of the soft foods that are allowed are eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese, fish chicken and soups. Soft foods are typically introduced in the stage 3 of a gastric bypass surgery and the first two stages only involve liquids. Actually people lose weight only during these stages and after that it becomes a maintenance process. However, even in these stages one has to watch their diet very closely.
