Normally when you have high triglycerides, the most common advice you will get is to drink diet soda. But how far does this help you and how are triglycerides connected to diet soda? Well, you will be amazed at how triglycerides and diet soda are connected. |
A research has found that if you drink one soda a day and even if it is diet soda, you still have an increased risk of developing metabolic syndrome. This syndrome is a group of health conditions namely high blood pressure, high blood sugar, low HDL levels, high triglycerides and getting too much fat around your waist. This syndrome increases your risk of getting heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
The study about triglycerides and diet soda was conducted by the Boston University School of Medicine and were then published in the Journal of the American Heart Association. This is one of the first studies of its kind.
The Framingham Heart Study has been following 6000 participants since 1948 and when the study initially began, all the participants were free from metabolic syndrome. The study found that over a period of four years, participants who drank one soda a day were 44 percent more likely to get metabolic syndrome compared to those who did not drink. The sodas were regular as well as diet soda.
However, this study's results were not surprising because the link between soda drinking and metabolic syndrome was known by researchers. However, the Fraingham Heart Study concludes that people who drink soda, diet or regular, are more prone to eating foods that are not healthy for the heart and this could be the reason why these people have such a high risk.
However, the findings of this study are hotly debated by the soft drink and beverage industry and the American Heart Association, which clarified that the study does not show a direction connection between soda consumption and the risk of developing heart disease.
Some experts believe that just the way people have realized the ill-effects of trans fats and hydrogenated oils that are present in fat-free and low-fat food products, similarly drinking diet soda cannot insulate a person from developing high triglycerides and other health problems.
