Apart from diet and exercise, medication can play a key role in reducing LDL and the triglyceride levels in one’s cholesterol. However, a single medication which could handle more than one aspect of cholesterol was something that was not available previously. |
But presently there is a new medication in the market which is assumed to affect the levels of all the three aspects of cholesterol -- HDL, LDL and triglycerides.
This new medication is known as Simcor and it has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. According to a study conducted by the American Heart Association, Simcor had a major impact on all the three lipid profiles and it was observed that even people who were taking a low dosage of this drug showed an increase of 25 percent in their HDL levels and a 23 percent decrease in LDL levels. There was also a 23 percent decrease in triglycerides that was reported in the low dosage group.
When the results of the low dosage group are so good, one can imagine that the results of the high dose would be even better. The other good news about this drug is that it is well tolerated by the patients. Hence, this new drug is highly beneficial in controlling the levels of lipid profiles and a patient may not have to take different drugs for different profiles but a single medication can deal with all the three.
The makers of this drug are Abbot Laboratories and they have filed an application with the US Food and Drug Administration for marketing this drug commercially.
