It is indeed a good thing to have more HDL in the blood because a higher HDL means lower LDL levels. LDL is bad cholesterol and the lower it is, the better it is for the one’s heart. Likewise when the HDL levels are low, automatically the LDL levels rise. |
When breastfeeding, mothers have low HDL levels and high LDL levels, the only one way to control it is through diet and exercise. With the help of a proper diet one can get the LDL levels under control and exercise can help increase the HDL level. Those who have low HDL levels do not necessarily need to indulge in cholesterol rich foods. This is because the cholesterol required by the body is produced by the liver itself. However, any excess HDL in the body may automatically be taken care of, in case of breastfeeding mothers because this gets passed on to the baby through the mother’s milk and this HDL cholesterol is very beneficial for the child as well as the mother.
For those breastfeeding women, whose HDL levels are low, it need not be a cause of concern because it is believed that simple exercises like walking, jogging and bicycle riding can help increase HDL levels. Moreover something simple like cranberry juice can also raise HDL levels. However, before using cranberry juice, you need to check with your doctor whether it is alright to consume the juice while breastfeeding.
Hence, you need not panic if the HDL levels are low in breastfeeding mothers, but you just need to pay proper attention to diet and exercise.
