Can Vitamin C Prevent Food Intolerances ?

Food intolerance has nothing to do with the immune system unlike a food allergy. While many believe they suffer from allergies, theirs in fact is intolerance.

Food intolerance occurs when the body lacks certain enzymes or chemicals necessary to digest certain types of foods. Symptoms of intolerance could well be delayed and hence, it is often difficult to identify the actual food or drink that gave rise to the intolerance.

Symptoms generally are irritable bowel sensation, intermittent diarrhea, gas, constipation, skin rashes, migraine or a headache and an unproductive cough.

Food intolerances occur because of the presence of certain chemicals like salicylate, tartarazine and benzoic acid in certain foods. These are present in a wide variety of foods ranging from particular fruits, vegetables and nuts to chocolates, wines and cheeses. Identification of the offending food is often difficult and may entail a process of elimination over a prolonged length of time.

Another common type of intolerance where enzymes are lacking is lactose intolerance when a sufferer lacks lactose to digest dairy products. Similarly, gluten intolerance affects the intestine which makes it difficult for the body to absorb water and nutrients from the food.

Vitamins and minerals are necessary for effective metabolism but nutrients are what is necessary for energy. In a normal well balanced diet with fruit and vegetables, vitamin C is present in adequate quantity to meet metabolic requirement but has minimal effect on intolerance. There is no evidence that vitamin C has any benefits in food intolerance though its efficacy with food allergies is established
