Niacin And ADHD

Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) characteristics include difficulty in sustaining attention or completing tasks, easy distractibility, impulsive behavior, and an excessive inclination to fidget and move about.

The reason why Niacin could treat ADHD is because both are strongly linked to brain chemistry.

Research has suggested that children with ADHD may have an imbalance in the neurotransmitters in the front part of the brain. Some doctors believe they do not have enough of a neurotransmitter called dopamine. Children with ADHD may also lack the neurotransmitter noradrenaline. Without enough dopamine or noradrenaline, the front part of the brain cannot deal with and react to information in the way that it should.

On its part, Niacin too has been strongly linked to brain chemistry by many research studies. Niacin is important for the production of a brain chemical, neurotransmitter, called serotonin. As a neurotransmitter, serotonin helps to relay messages from one area of the brain to another. Because of the widespread distribution of its cells, it is believed to influence a variety of psychological and other body functions. Of the approximately 40 million brain cells, most are influenced either directly or indirectly by serotonin. This includes brain cells related to mood, sleep, memory and learning and some social behavior.

Several findings have established the interaction between Serotonin, which is facilitated by Niacin, and Dopamine, a neurotransmitter lacking in patients with ADHD. The findings state that the serotonin system inhibits dopaminergic function at the level of the origin of the dopamine system in the midbrain as well as at the terminal dopaminergic fields in the forebrain.

The above findings have led to the speculation that Niacin may treat ADHD.
