What Is The Purpose Of Vitamin B1 In Your Body?

Vitamin B1 is an important vitamin. However, what is the purpose of Vitamin B1 in your body? Vitamin B1 serves a number of purposes in the body. Some of them are listed below for your reference.

  1. Vitamin B1, or thiamin, is an important coenzyme that helps the body convert food into energy. This is because certain enzymes require thiamin as a co--enzyme in order to function in carbohydrate metabolism. Therefore, a thiamin deficiency would be detrimental to the functionality of these enzymes. These enzymes function in biochemical pathways that result in the generation of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is a major form of energy for the cell. Thus, even the production of Adenosine Triphosphate(ATP) molecules would not be possible without this essential vitamin.
  2. One of the enzymes, pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH), requires thiamin as a co-enzyme, for the production of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter, a chemical that carries messages between different nerve cells or between nerve cells and muscles. This explains the importance of Vitamin B1 for optimal functioning of the nervous system and muscular functioning.
  3. Thiamin is also a co-enzyme required by another enzyme, branched-chain keto acid dehydrogenases, involved in amino acid metabolism by the cell. Thus, Vitamin B1 assists in manufacturing fat and metabolizing protein.
  4. It also stimulates action in the brain, promotes general growth.
  5. The heart also depends on this Vitamin to circulate blood throughout the body and ensure that oxygen is supplied to the blood cells in the body.
  6. It aids the digestion of carbohydrates and also aids in peristalsis, which prevents constipation.
  7. Vitamin B1 is beneficial for the skin and hair as it promotes healthy blood flow and helps to maintain a normal red blood count.
