With the increase in the number of over the counter dietary supplements, there have been a lot of warnings given by the doctors who have treated people consuming these pills after being promised of miraculous results. |
Doctors have found that many of these products contain list of ‘false’ and dangerous ingredients which are unlisted in the product labels. Moreover, steroidal content in the product which could cause potential health hazards are not disclosed.
Some of the supplements do not list the actual concentration of the ingredients used. In addition, they list fraudulent content that may have not been used or may not have the effect that the manufacturers actually claim. The pills also contain harmful substances like estradiol and testosterone which increases the possibility of developing incurable serious prostrate cancer.
Herbal and hormonal drugs sold over the counter which are promoted as natural supplements contain components that are harmful to health. Some of these components can reduce the effect of anti-cancer drugs if administered to the patient.
Since these supplements do not require any approval from the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), one does not know how the products have been handled while manufacturing and also the accuracy of the information as disclosed by the supplier. There is no assurance of safety or efficacy of the products. Some of them become popular even without proven clinical trials or research reports.
The doctors also insist that it is high time governments insist on regulating these commercial supplements and ensure their safety before promoting in the market through well established results in order to protect the victims from falling into the vicious trap of believing false claims and fads.
It is better to seek the expert advice of the medical practitioners before consuming these supplements in order to prevent harmful irreversible effects on the body.
