Since the demand for these pills have increased in the last few years, some cheap pills containing toxic substances and contaminants have started entering the market. For example, people should be careful while choosing calcium supplements as some of them are contaminated with lead.
Generally, these diet pills come under the category of “diet supplements” and not medical drugs and hence are not approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). So, their side effects are not scientifically proven and documented.
Many of these pills contain harmful substances like amphetamines as key ingredients which could cause a lot of harm to the body. The side effects include anxiety, high blood pressure, nausea, loss of appetite, diarrhea, poor skin and nail health, loss of hair, heart problems including irregular heartbeat, and sometimes heart attacks.
Some pills boost metabolism and increase the rate of heartbeat and hence can threaten its normal functioning. Some people show symptoms of withdrawal and depression. Diet pills which work as appetite suppressants cause reduce in the intake of calories and healthy diet which leads to unhealthy weight loss and tiredness.
It is important to be aware of the dosage, warnings and recommendations before consuming the supplements. If adequate information is not available, it is always better to seek the advice of the practitioner before choosing a pill especially if the woman is pregnant or the child is less than 12 years.
