Are Dietary Supplements Bad For You ?

The NLEA (Nutrition Labeling and Education Act) of 1990 defines nutritional substances like herbs, vitamins and minerals that can be part of dietary supplements.

In the current days, these supplements come in the form of powders, pills or tonics.

They include fibers, proteins, gland extracts from animals, amino acids and also fish oils. Vital compounds like nucleic acids, germanium and enzymes are also included.

These supplements are generally safe though some of them may have side effects which have been documented in the past. Hence, it is always recommended to be educated about the precautions, dosages and side effects of the dietary supplements that you plan to consume. Though these supplements are not classified as drugs, it is also advisable to seek medical advice in case you are pregnant or allergic in the past to a couple of substances.

In general, vitamins and minerals supplements do not pose many concerns and are considered to be safe. But too much of any supplement may result in adverse reactions and can cause harm to the body. For e.g. excessive intake of iron could be poisonous to the body. High levels of selenium can cause damage to the tissues.  Too much of niacin causes liver damage. Huge amounts of Vitamin A in the body could cause liver and bone damage, diarrhoea and birth defects.

Some supplements may contain toxic substances while others may contain contaminants. For example, it is reported that some calcium supplements contain lead which could be really harmful to the body.

Commercial dietary supplements like weight loss products are available in the market which causes suppression of diet intake and excessive metabolism of carbohydrates and fats. It is better to take FDA (Food and Drug Administration) approved products in conjunction with the consultation of a medical practitioner.
