Employers Liability Insurance

It is the law that employers have to provide employers’ liability insurance against injury or disease for all the employees that work for them. When you are working, your employer is responsible for your health and safety at work.

If you are injured in an accident at work, or become ill due to your work, and you think that your employer is responsible for it, you can get compensation.

In order to ensure that your employer has the ability to pay the compensation to you or any other employee, it is necessary for the employer to have an insurance policy, which is known as employers’ liability insurance.

An employers’ liability insurance usually provides compensation for injuries or illnesses caused on site or off site. This insurance is quite different from other insurance policies that an employer might have. The other insurance policies that an employer might take are voluntary but an employers’ liability insurance is mandatory and compulsory. An employer can be fined if he does not have an up-to-date employers’ liability insurance.

Employers’ liability insurance is mandatory in the UK. However, most public organizations, including government agencies and departments, local authorities, police and nationalized companies are exempt from this type of insurance. Even health service bodies and some organizations that are funded by public funds are exempt.

Having an employers’ liability insurance gives an employer peace of mind in case an employee seeks compensation for any mishap that might occur at a work place. This insurance ensures that the employer has sufficient funds to settle the compensation and the compensation is paid by the insurance company.
