Studies On The Effect Of Weight Training Women

Many women are now using weight training as a way to improve their fitness and improve their performance in competitive sports. In fact, there are even weightlifting championships for women. But what is the effect of weight training on women?

For many years it was assumed that if women did weight training, they would end up looking very masculine. However, studies on the effect of weight training on women have shown that this is not true. Women can improve their strength quite a bit by weight training without having too much muscle growth. Studies on the effect of weight training on women pointed out that women do not develop muscle mass like men because they have just 5 to 10 percent of testosterone compared to what men have. In addition, the studies concluded that by doing weight training, there was no increase in blood testosterone levels in women and hence, the masculinity issue does not arise.

However, there are some studies to suggest that due to the effect that weight training has on the endocrine system, women who do intensive weight training could have a problem with their menstrual cycle. Therefore, any weight training that a woman does should be tailored to suit her menstrual cycle. While there is have been no studies to check the effect of hormonal variations on muscle growth and strength, it would be prudent to assume that the cyclic hormonal variations that occur in women could end having a negative impact on muscle growth and strength development.
