A respiratory arrest may not necessarily mean it is a cardiac arrest. The heart may be still functioning but the air is not passing through. However, if resuscitation help is delayed for a person who has had a respiratory arrest, then it can lead to cardiac arrest which means the heart stops beating.
A person who is having difficulty breathing is in respiratory distress. A person who is not breathing is in respiratory arrest. A person in respiratory arrest needs resuscitation. Resuscitation by squeezing the tummy is typically performed when a person has drowned. The tummy is squeezed so that all the water that is stuck in the chest and abdomen area comes out. That is the only way in fact to save the person who was drowning. Sometimes the same method is used even when a person is suffocating. This could be due to choking a din this case the object is first removed and then the tummy squeeze is performed to regulate the air flow and restore the breathing.
The main aim of this first aid procedure is to restore the breathing and make the person return to normal. A lot of pressure is directly applied on the tummy so that the air way that is blocked pumps out whatever that has been blocking the passage.
