Resuscitation Drugs Used In The Pregnant Patient

Pregnancy is a delicate condition and drugs are used to an extremely minimal extent on pregnant women. Any drug will have its effect directly on the fetus and that is why doctors are very careful about what they prescribe to a pregnant women.

Resuscitation drugs are usually used in cases of cardiac arrest as the last attempt to revive the person.

A cardiac arrest is considered to be a terminal event and very few people are saved when it occurs. If a woman has had cardiac problems earlier and is at high risk for cardiac arrest then it is unfortunate. If the unfortunate incident has to happen depending on the term of the pregnancy, the doctors would attempt to save the child first because drugs may not be safe on a pregnant woman.

The effectiveness of resuscitation drugs is still doubtful and they have not really helped the problem of cardiac arrest. It does have a wide spread usage and also is being used since a long time. However, they have not shown any survival rate and that is why they are given the last preference when it is a case of pregnancy and cardiac arrest.

Some drugs very rarely may restore blood circulation but as we speak it is very rare. Pregnancy has its own difficulties and as the fetus grows, the demand also grows. A woman who has a cardiac condition only increases her risks further by becoming pregnant. Also, the chances are high that problem might get transferred to the fetus.
