Heat illnesses, like heat exhaustion and a heat stroke, can happen when your body cannot keep itself cool. As the temperature of the air rises, your body attempts to stay cool and sweats. The sweat evaporates by cooling down your body as a result. |
On some days when it is hot and humid, the evaporation of sweat slows down due to the increased levels of moisture in the air. When the body does not sweat enough to cool your body, then your body temperature tends to rise, and as a result you may become ill.
Heat exhaustion occurs when the body feels too hot. There are various causes for it like exercise or hot weather to name some. As a result of heat exhaustion you may feel weak, dizzy or sometimes confused. You can also have a severe headache or a fast pulse rate. Sometimes you may get dehydrated and pass very little urine.
If you think you are having a bout of heat exhaustion, then you should get out of the heat immediately. Make sure that you rest in a cool and shaded place. Attempt to drink plenty of water or any other kind of fluid without delay. However, do not touch alcohol. Alcohol can actually make the heat exhaustion worse.
If you do not see yourself feeling better within the next 30 minutes, then you should immediately contact your doctor or get yourself to the emergency room. If the heat exhaustion is not treated promptly, then it can progress to a heatstroke very quickly and may cause death.
