Sleeping pills are addictive just like marijuana and illicit drugs and one should avoid taking them as much as possible. If a person has a sleeping disorder, he should try to treat it naturally and through herbal medications or therapies if possible. Sleep medications are the worst because they never cure the problem. Instead they tend to worsen it.
There are several reasons as to why person should not take sleeping pills as a cure for sleeping disorders.
Most sleep disorders are curable using herbal and natural therapy. So, one need not take prescription sleep medications as these medications only solve the problem temporarily. Through natural therapy and herbal medications one can find permanent cure.
Sleep medications have effect on the brain and they work by deactivating the brain cells so that the person goes off to sleep. It is like making the brain believe that the person needs to sleep and this is a forced reaction.
If a person who is on sleep medication stops taking the pills, then he will not be able to go to sleep. It will take him days or weeks to fall to sleep naturally. In addition, during this period he would have to cope with withdrawal symptoms as most sleeping pills are highly addictive. The only way to get a person to give up the habit of sleeping pills is to reduce the dosage gradually until the person stops taking the pills completely.
Sleep medications can cause short term memory loss and they weaken the memory overall. Sleeping pills also impair the decision making process and often cause the person to be in a confused state of mind.
However, doctors do prescribe sleeping pills only if they are absolutely necessary and even these can be avoided by adapting to natural sleep medications.
