Severe Sunburn Treatment

Severe sunburns are serious health condition, and often require immediate medical attention. In case of severe sunburns, oral steroid therapy may be prescribed for several days. If the person suffers from blisters due to the sunburn, steroids are not prescribed to avoid risk of getting secondary infection.

Nevertheless, there are some effective measures one can take to treat severe sunburns at home. Anti-inflammatory medicines like Ibrufen or Naproxen help to reduce inflammation and pain. Drinking green tea or pomegranate extract is effective for their soothing anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, they contain antioxidants, which hasten the healing process and help to reduce the damage from UV sun rays.

Cold compresses with burow solution, milk, tea or vinegar, especially apple cider vinegar, mixed with distilled water is highly effective. It should be applied on the affected area with a clean cloth or cotton for 15-20 minutes. The solution should be changed every 2 to 3 hours. In case of larger burn areas, this solution can be mixed with bath water.

Applying gels made from natural ingredients like aloe vera help to soothe the affected area skin. Pure aloe vera gels or even topical moisturizers made from aloe can be used to treat the burns.  Frequent application of the gel on the affected area at regular intervals is recommended. The blisters should not be covered.

Vitamin E capsules and creams are easily available without prescription, and these can be used to treat the severe sunburn. Vitamin E lubricates the skin and enhances the healing process. Plain yogurt and sour cream significantly helps in taking away the sting.

Cold baths without the use of soaps with perfumes are helpful. Perfumed soaps can further irritate the skin. One should also abstain from using any skin abrasive items like exfoliating creams till the sunburns are completely healed. Drinking plenty of fluids, and eating fresh fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants help in the healing process. Daily intake of thousand mg of vitamin C can expedite the healing process. In case of fever, chills, nausea, dizziness or even dehydration, one must get immediate medical attention.
