Before treating a staph infection one must know the causes of the infection. This kind of infection is caused by staphylococcus aureus bacteria. This kind of bacteria is found everywhere, including on the human skin. |
Staph infection can cause boils, furuncle, impetigo, cellulitis and paronychia. Besides these skin infections, staph bacteria can also cause a blood infection called bacteremia, lymphadenitis or lymph gland infection. Staph bacteria can cause scalded skin syndrome, toxic shock syndrome and many more serious skin problems. The staphylococcus aureus bacteria is also known to cause pneumonia, ear infection and sinusitis.
There are a number of ways to treat staph infections. The most prevalent being antibiotics to treat infections caused by the bacteria. There are antibiotic creams and ointments for impetigo. Oral or intravenous antibiotic are given in case of severe infections.
Staph bacteria, including methicillin resistant staph aureus (MRSA), are the ones which develop a resistance to antibiotics. For more serious drug-resistant MRSA, the doctors in the hospital can administer Vancomycin, and surgically drain the boils and affected areas.
The good news here is that these staph infections can be prevented. If you have a cut or skin break, you need to immediately wash it with soap and warm water to prevent any entry of the bacteria through them. Applying antiseptic ointments can also keep the cuts dry. One should avoid sharing personal items like towels and toothbrushes, as they might be contaminated with staph bacteria. To prevent infections on the feet, one should use foot coverings inside locker rooms.
