What Is An Impetigo ?

Impetigo is a kind of skin infection caused by bacteria. These germs can enter human body thorough different ways due to its highly contagious nature. Impetigo is caused by two types of bacteria -- Streptococcus and Staphylococcus.

Children are more vulnerable to this bacterial skin infection than adults. Many believe this is due the developing immune system in children, which is not as strong as an adult. Children can contract and spread this bacteria very easily as they are always in close proximity to each other in playgrounds and schools.

It is not unusual to find scrapes and cuts on a child’s skin, which serves as an easy pathway for the bacteria into the body. As a skin infection, impetigo can occur on any part of the body.

There are two type of impetigo -- non-bullous and bullous. These two different forms can occur at different parts of the body. Non-bullous impetigo is the tiny small red rash, which is circular in shape with yellow sticky surface. This type of impetigo is easily treated, and does not last for long time. Bullous impetigo is the large, circular red rash, with yellow sticky surface, and usually last for a longer period of time and is hard to pop.

Luckily, impetigo sores and blisters are not as painful as they look. They can be easily treated and by adopting few simple precautionary measures they can be prevented very easily. It is important o remember that if this infection is neglected they can prove to be painful and cause a lot of discomfort to the sick kid. So, it is important to teach clean hygienic habits to the children. Also, teach good hand washing habits for an infection free childhood.
