Cold sores are the painful blisters caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). The sores usually occur inside or outside the nose and lips. Cold sores are one of the most common viral infections of the world. Once this virus enters the body, it is very difficult to eradicate it. |
It stays dormant for long periods and results in outbreaks after a period of dormancy. Most often people get infected by the virus in their childhood or when they come in close intimate contact with someone who has the virus. Any exchange of body fluids like saliva or blood can result in the infection. For example, kissing is believed to be one of the most common ways of spreading herpes simplex virus. There is no permanent cure for herpes simplex virus, and only an outbreak can be temporarily treated.
On entering the body, the virus makes its way from the skin into the nerve group cells called a ganglion. The virus stays in the ganglion and causes constant outbreaks. The outbreaks are triggered by a number of factors like stress, fever, infections, hormones changes or pregnancy.
It is important to remember that the herpes simplex virus is very contagious. It can spread through any intimate contact. Kissing, sharing a cup or utensils, lipstick or lip balm can also spread the virus. It can also be spread when someone touches the sores and then touches any abrasion or cut on the skin. It is advised not to touch cold sores and then touch any other part of your body, especially your eyes, nose or mouth The herpes simplex virus is known to cause a lot of damage to human eyes.
