How Does Schizophrenia Differ From Schizoaffective?

Schizophrenia and schizoaffective have common symptoms and both sound very similar to each other. However, there are some differences which actually separate the two of the conditions.

Schizoaffective disorder is characterized by all the symptoms of schizophrenia and it is also accompanied by severe mood disorders like a bi polar disorder for example. It is more severe than schizophrenia and the treatment also takes longer.

How Does Schizophrenia Differ from Schizoaffective?

In a schizophrenic patient, it is not a must that the patient should have suffered from any episodes of psychosis or any kind of seizure and/or attack. However, in a schizoaffective disorder, the patient would have suffered one or more episodes of bi polar disorder attacks and that is how in most cases it is characterized.

Schizophrenia can affect anyone and men and women suffer from it in an equal ratio. It is caused more due to genetics than any other reason. However, schizoaffective disorder is predominant in women and can cause extreme mood disorders. There are several kinds of schizophrenia like paranoia and severe hallucinations. However, in schizoaffective disorder any of these types of schizophrenia is always accompanied by mood disorders.

For a schizoaffective patient, the mode of treatment is to treat the depression and the underlying causes for it. The main aim of the treatment in a schizoaffective patient is to treat the depression and it is only after that the schizophrenia itself is treated. For a schizophrenic patient the mode of treatment is directly administering topical drugs to calm them down. Sometimes cognitive therapy is also used immediately.
