Cognitive therapy and manic depression go hand in hand for people suffering from depression because cognitive therapy is the only rescue or treatment available for them.

 

Medical researchers believe that if the patient suffering from manic depression is taught how to cope with their problems then the results are much more effective as compared to the results achieved from administering drugs.

Severe forms of manic depression are treated with the help of medications in several people. However, these medications solve the problem by bringing back the chemical levels in the brain to normal. People under medication for manic depression are often found to be sleeping because that is the only way the medications work. If the brain does not function for a specific period of time, then the chemical composition in the brain automatically returns to normal. However, once the person is awake the brain automatically develops the same thinking pattern and it could lead to the same chemical imbalance within a short period of time.

A permanent and a more lasting solution for patients suffering from manic depression is cognitive therapy which helps the person to deal with the depression in a positive way. It is just like going to school or college where you learn about new things and put them into practice. In cognitive therapy classes a person learns how to behave or control certain behavior patterns when they are in an impulsive mood. It does take time to get used to the new behavior pattern but as a person continues practicing the therapy lessons he or she trains the brain to react in a normal way. This also helps to keep the chemical imbalance in the brain under control.
