In most autistic children it is noticed that they never look into the eyes of the person who they are talking to. It is not normal because most people look into the eye of a person while talking, but autistic children tend to look away. |
It is very difficult to get them to look into your eyes. The reason for this is still very unclear and many doctors do not understand why this particular behavior is present in autistic children.
It could be because they are generally anti-social and find it difficult to trust anyone and as a possible reaction they may not look into anyone’s eyes. It is a normal pattern observed in a person who has trust issues and that is why it is related to autism also.
There is cure in cognitive therapy to rectify this behavior but it takes a lot of patience and time to achieve it. One way to make children look into your eyes as per cognitive therapy is to do what the doctors do. Hold a finger in front of the child and ask the child to look at it without turning their heads. Make it seem like a game to them and tell them that they have to follow it with their eyes. Once you get them to do it then slowly start moving your finger towards your eyes and get them to look at you eye to eye. Once they look into your eye, they might look away instantly but at least it helped them to make that first eye contact. Repeating this several times lets them learn over a period of time that they can look into the eyes of people while talking.
