If there is an autistic child in the house, it is the responsibility of the parent to care for the child in the same way even after their demise. |
It is a very difficult situation and yet the parent has to make alternative arrangements if the child is not independent.
Autistic people, children included, are very dependent emotionally and they need someone to be able to give them direction and support throughout their lives. Attending to the future needs of the children should be the first thing on the parents' list no matter what. Death is an unpleasant event for everyone including the parent and the child. A child who has development disability is a very big responsibility.
The needs of an autistic child have to be evaluated and a detailed prognosis has to be reached. It is a good idea for the parents of the autistic child to meet with a professional who can give them unbiased and professional advice on how to cope with the situation. Some autistic children who are very lucky become independent and create a career for themselves, but not all are so lucky. It depends on the level of function for the child. It is also a must that both the parents of the autistic child need to be involved equally in the upbringing of the child so that the emotional dependency of the child is divided between the parents; and the child is not emotionally dependent just on one parent. The parents of an autistic child have to plan for care of the child and also comforts after they die.
