Measle Tranmission

Measles, a highly infectious viral disease, caused by the “Rubella virus”, is commonly found in children. The symptoms of this disease include high fever accompanied by rashes all over the body along with high fever, constant and acute cough, sneezing and red watery eyes. This infection occurs mainly in temperate climates during winter or spring seasons.

The transmission of this infection occurs due to the direct contact of the respiratory droplets of the person. Once the person coughs or sneezes, the air around him is contaminated with this virus which spreads when it lands on another victim while he inhales the infected air or touches the mouth or nose with the contaminated hands on which the droplets might have landed by mistake.

The symptoms show up around a week to 2 weeks after the virus enters and starts infecting the body. The recovery time is about a week from the onset of rashes. The infection can spread from about four days prior to the appearance of the rashes to almost four days after the eruption.

Though measles is very common in childhood, adults can also contract this disease if they are not adequately immune. If left untreated, it can lead to further complications like pneumonia and ear infection.

Measles is not a recurrent infection, which means that, if a person contracts this disease once, he gets a life long immunity from the disease.

The best way to avoid contracting this infection is to keep the infected person in isolation. Immunization with MMR (mumps, measles, rubella) vaccine can also prevent contracting the disease.
