In spite of these, Tunisia still remains the least preferred tourist destination in the world due to the prevalence of some of the dreaded infectious diseases the present considerable risk to the tourists visiting the country.

Most important among these are insect-borne diseases such as leishmaniasis, dengue, filariasis, and West Nile fever. Hence, travelers are advised to carry insect repellants along with them. Apart from these, there also other infectious diseases prevalent in Tunisia that include various water-borne, food-borne infections such as typhoid, cholera, hepatitis A, hepatitis B, travelers’ diarrhea, rabies and tuberculosis. In fact, outbreaks of these diseases tend to happen very frequently. Schistosomiasis and onchocerciasis are other parasitic infections that are widely prevalent in the waters of Nile Valley. As per the WHO reports, there have also been cases of people getting infected with avian influenza virus H5N1 in Tunisia. However, unlike other African countries, prevalence of malaria is less common in this part of the world.

The biggest disadvantage of visiting Tunisia is that the country has limited medical facilities. Hence, before visiting Tunisia, travelers must remember to have their vaccinations up-to-date. Other important preventive measures that must be followed include carrying iodine tablets, portable water filters, sun screen lotion, sun glasses, anti-bacterial hand wipes and alcohol-based hand sanitizers.
