Earlier it was believed that swine flu, or the H1N1 virus as it is now referred to, could generally not affect humans and it could not spread from one person to another, but the current outbreak of the H1N1 flu has proved that wrong. When humans may come in direct contact with the infected pigs, the virus spreads to the humans. |
It is reported the H1N1 is currently seen spreading from one person to another, in the same way that seasonal flu spreads.
The main way in which H1N1 spreads from one person to another is through touch, coughing, and sneezing. Since this is a new type of virus, it is believed that humans may not have immunity to it and hence, there may be more cases of such virus and it could also be more severe. The other unfavorable factor is that there is no vaccine as yet for this virus.
One can maintain some hygiene and follow some basic steps to stop H1N1 virus from spreading further. These steps would include washing hands often with soap and water and more preferably with alcohol based hand cleaners, covering one’s mouth while sneezing or coughing with a tissue and proper disposal of such tissues. It is also important that once one exhibits symptoms of flu one should stay at home and avoid going out so that the virus does not spread to others.
Sometimes it is possible that someone may spread the virus even before knowing that they are sick. Hence, it is also important to seek the advice of a doctor as soon as any of the symptoms of flu such as cold, sore throat, high fever, muscle aches, and headaches are found.
