Do Masks Protect You From The Swine Flu ?

Swine flu is the recent episode of people panicking with an epidemic of a highly contagious disease that shows its symptoms quite late. One trend that the epidemic has set is having people wear masks while going around. Before commenting on the masks and their efficiency, it is essential to know that the swine flu mainly spreads by touch and physical contact.

Other modes of spreading are small droplets that are suspended in the air when infected people sneeze or cough, or the virus, itself, randomly floating through the air.

In such cases, a surgical mask or a N95 mask is not going to protect you completely from swine flu. The major reason for this is that the virus is extremely small and it can pass through the mask.

But, wearing masks significantly reduces your risks of catching swine flu. Here is how. A surgical mask can filter large drops of liquid, thus preventing direct droplets of cough or sneeze by an infected person entering into your body. However, it is not fine enough to prevent smaller droplets from passing through.

A N95 mask, on the other hand, is comparatively finer. Hence, it can filter out even smaller particles like flu-laden cough droplets. This is the mask that the doctors are instructed to wear while treating patients down with swine flu. While both the masks cannot essentially filter the virus particles out, they can certainly help in restricting the hands from touching the face.

All said and done, frequent washing of hands and usage of hand sanitizers along with drinking a lot of fluids will certainly help you more that just wearing a mask.
