Antiviral drugs are those medications that are used for either controlling or curing infections that are caused by invading viruses in the human body. They are significantly different from other drugs under the class of antimicrobials like antibiotics, antifungal and anti-parasitic drugs. |
When a virus invades the body, it takes control of a particular receptor cell and then uses the cell for its reproduction and replication, thereby spreading itself in the body, while leaving the cell destroyed or leading to malfunction of the cell. This then leads to various types of infections and diseases call viral infections that include AIDS, hepatitis, and influenza.
Most antiviral drugs just inhibit the replication of the virus and thus control the infection, not destroy the virus. This can be done by various modes either by preventing the entry of the virus into the cell, interfering in its replication process inside the cell nucleus or by preventing the virus from coming out.
Sometimes, the antiviral merely stops the virus from releasing its proteins, or makes the cell immune to the proteins. Antiviral drugs also strengthen the immune system of the body and induce the body to produce more antibodies. These medications are to be consumed only on the prescription of a doctor and depending on the infection and the virus, the dosage differs. But, the medication is essential, nonetheless.
Thus, an antiviral medication is used on the prescription of a doctor, to help inhibit a viral infection and assist the body in controlling the spread of the infection, and thereby leading to the infection’s early destruction.
