Can Pets Get The Swine Flu ?

Swine flu as of now has been reported as a disease which spreads from human to humans. There is no instance where the pets have been affected by this disease through contact with human or vice versa. So, can pets get the swine flu? Presently the answer to this is no, they cannot.

All influenza viruses in animals are usually spread by wild migratory birds. But pets such as cats and dogs can spread influenza virus only to their own species and not to humans. Likewise in the present cases swine flu, it is a case of pig flu mixed with human virus which is being spread from human to human and not to any animals. In fact, though this condition is known as swine flu there are no instances of pigs in the United States having been affected by this virus.

But if one is still worried about one’s pet, then one can closely monitor one’s pets and if one owns a farm with pigs in it, then it is best to keep them isolated from the public. It is best to consult a veterinarian if the pets show any sign of illness such as lack of energy or sneezing or coughing or any kind of discharge from the eyes.

It is important to maintain general hygiene for the safety of oneself as well as one’s pets and stay calm and be vigilant of the general health of the pet and if there are any signs of illness, then check with the veterinarian. But apart from this, there is really no need to panic, because our pets are not really in any danger of contracting swine flu.
