Type 2 Diabetes And The Military

Can a type 2 diabetes person hope to join the army or the military? Diabetes is a disease that may cause a person to be overweight and obese. Both of these conditions do not suit the military job profiles, which are more field based. Every person in the army needs to be ready for combat irrespective of the position that they may hold if the country needs them.

More and more people from all over the world are being diagnosed with diabetes and it has reached epidemic levels in the United States alone. Diabetes may not affect a person to the extent where it starts interfering with the person’s ability to do a job. If he or she remains healthy over a period of time and has an effective disease management plan, then they will be considered for a suitable position in any field. However, by default the military would only prefer more fit individuals to perform any job responsibility.

Diabetes is an avoidable disease for many people and those who are fit and fine have the least chances to develop it at any stage of life. Most people who have the type 2 diabetes are obese and overweight. Furthermore, to apply for the military a person should be able to meet some health standards and the body mass index is also taken into account. Any person who does not meet these requirements gets rejected directly based on that factor. Also, even people who are thin have the chances of developing diabetes, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is the only way to prevent it.
