How Many Americans Have Type 1 Diabetes ?

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease and is caused by the body’s own immune system. Every year at least 30 children are diagnosed with this condition in the United States. Type 1 diabetes in children is caused due to a severe fever or viral infection and it happens suddenly. The only means of survival for such people is depending on insulin.

There are millions of Americans in the country who suffer from diabetes. Nearly 23 million people in the age group of 15 to 20 years suffer from the condition and that amounts to 10 percent of the population. More than 10 million people who are above the age of 60 suffer from the condition. The statistics are rising every year.

Diabetes also occurs in people who belong to a certain ethnic background like non Hispanic white race tends to suffer more than the non Hispanic black race. Such data is collected from various hospitals across the country and then the ethnic background and the age group is correlated. There are also several undiagnosed cases which are taken into account in these figures. While the exact number of people cannot be estimated in modern day it has become a common occurrence in various types of people.

People, who are older and above the age of 50, are less likely to get it due to dysfunction of the immune system. Mostly children whose immune system is still building tend to get diabetes of this type. Children also fall sick more often than older people and that may be one of the contributing reasons.
