Hypoglycemia Protocols For Newborns

Newborns are very delicate and initially it is not human nature to suspect that something is wrong with them. Everyone hopes for the best when the baby is just born. All said and done some babies are not as fortunate as the others and they are born with some prevailing conditions like hypoglycemia.

It is one of the most difficult conditions to diagnose in a new born because the results of blood test will be minimal. The only way to suspect is if the mother had gestational diabetes before the baby was born. In that glucose levels are checked when the infant is born and also after they have had their first feed. Infants tend to eat in frequent intervals so it is quite difficult to arrive at accurate levels.

Different hospitals follow different protocol. However, all infants are treated with extreme care and the way of evaluation followed is that you eliminate the possibility of a condition and not arrive at it through tests. Also the chances are high when it comes to infants that they may have remote episodes of hypoglycemia depending on the conditions under which they were born. If it has been a long surgery, then the infant may have been starved by the time it is born. Young infants who suffer from the condition even after a couple of months have to be evaluated further. There is no scope of treatment for the infants when they are too small and the only way out is to closely monitor their food intake and glucose levels.
