Hypoglycemia is a condition that can affect anyone from small children to old adults. However, some children are prone to this due to some underlying conditions that they suffer from. Hypoglycemia is caused due to the abnormally low levels of glucose in the blood. |
Children who have diabetes may be more prone to this condition and sometimes it is also passed on from the mother who had gestational diabetes. An improper diet caused with excessive activity can also cause hypoglycemia in children. This may lead to unconsciousness and seizures in children. However, a child who has this condition can show irritability, shivering, sweatiness and also can complain of hunger all the time. Not all children who have hypoglycemia suffer from diabetes. Also, there may stray episodes of low blood sugar in children.
It is very important to differentiate if it is a chronic condition or just a one time incident in children to cure it properly. Injuries that involve severe blood loss may also cause low levels of blood sugar in children and other abnormalities are anemia and weakness. Many children tend to anemic because of a poor diet compared to the level of activity. Low blood sugar problems can easily be sorted out in such children by improvising their diet and food habits. There is a rare kind of low blood sugar called reactive hypoglycemia which occurs in children for this type of condition further studies have to be conducted and the treatment may be based on the findings thereafter.
