Diabetes, or to use the proper medical name, diabetes mellitus, means ‘sweet urine’. Diabetes affects the body's ability to produce or respond to insulin. Insulin is a hormone that allows blood glucose (blood sugar) to enter the cells of the body and be used for energy. |
Diabetes results from defects in insulin action, insulin secretion, or both. In a person with diabetes, glucose is not transferred to the cells where it is needed. Instead it remains in the blood stream where it circulates progressively increasing blood sugar levels. Part of the excess glucose spills over where it is excreted in urine. This accounts for the name ‘sweet urine’, as the urine has a sweetish, acetone smell.
Because of elevated levels of blood glucose body cells are starved of energy. Over time, sustained high levels of glucose can damage the nerves, kidneys, eyes, heart and blood vessels.
Diabetes is treated with medication or shots of insulin in conjunction with a strict diet and regular exercise.
