The cardinal rule in controlling blood sugar is to stick with a diet low in fats, sugars and salt. Foods that are good for diabetics are most fruit and virtually all vegetables. These can be consumed liberally. Starchy carbohydrates should be eaten in moderation. No food is completely taboo, but some have to be severely restricted
Certain foods are best avoided. These are refined sugar, jam, molasses, fruit sugar, pastries, soft drinks, cream and fried foods. White sugar and white flour should be reduced drastically as should butter and hydrogenated vegetable oils.
Commonly used foods that are high in fats include salad dressing, oil, cream, cheese, butter, margarine, mayonnaise, avocado, olives, bacon and sweets. Sweets include cakes, pastries, cookies, ice cream, pies and syrups.
Junk food is best avoided. Potato chips are a small example of a common snack food. Potato chips are fried in oil. Each handful contains 150 calories and 10 grams of fat. This translates to over 20,000 calories and more than 1,000 grams of fat in a year. Doughnuts have anywhere between 200 to 300 calories and between 12 and 20 grams of fat per serving. Depending on the health conditions of the person, one needs to be stringent in order to avoid complications and manage the disease effectively.
Nowadays most foods like chocolates, ice cream etc., have alternatives suitable to diabetics.
