Type 1 diabetes is the more serious form, which manifests itself suddenly, with symptoms that occur within weeks or months. The first symptoms of untreated diabetes are high blood sugar levels. The glucose that is normally transferred from the blood to the cells fails to do so and results in elevated blood glucose.

Eventually this is excreted by the kidneys which draw on the body’s reserves of water. As a consequence, a person suffering from diabetes urinates with abnormal frequency which results in dehydration.

Some early symptoms indicative of diabetes are listed below. These vary from person to person:

Frequent urination in large quantities both during the day and at night
A corresponding increased thirst to replace the lost fluids
Fatigue and loss of stamina with an anemic appearance
Excessive hunger and the need to eat frequently. Nonetheless this is accompanied by a loss of weight
An acute vaginal itch in women suffering from type 2 diabetes
Formation of skin sores. Sores, cuts and wounds take inordinately long to heal
Numbness in the extremities of the hands and feet
Emotional upsets like irritability and depression. Sometimes a feeling of lethargy and drowsiness
Rapid, deep breathing
Breath smelling of acetone
Blurred vision corresponding to changing levels in blood glucose. This is the result of constant changing of shape of the eye lens
Nausea and vomiting
Dryness in the mouth

Diabetes is a serious disease that could lead to a host of other conditions including amputation and death. It should be attended to immediately. Diabetes has no cure but can be controlled with medication or insulin, modified dietary habits and exercise.
