Foods For Gestational Diabetes

Since gestational diabetes can be completely and effectively controlled with diet alone it is important to discuss your diet with a nutritionist. It is critical to maintain healthy blood sugar levels during pregnancy. A fasting glucose level of less than 95 mg/dl and a two hour postprandial needs to be less than 120 mg/dl.

In order to meet these goals healthy eating habits and smart food choices are essential.

Meal planning should center on eating several small meals in a day that will stabilize healthy blood sugar levels. This is preferable to three large meals which will result in fluctuation of blood sugar levels.

Breakfast may include whole grain toast, peanut butter, juice, egg whites, whole eggs, wheat English muffin, butter or margarine and melon.

Mid- morning snacks include an apple, cottage cheese, and yoghurt or granola.

A lunch diet may include lentil soup, whole grain crackers, low fat cheese, baby carrots, turkey or chicken, lettuce, tomatoes, mayonnaise and fruits.

Mid-afternoon snacks include almonds, fruits and salads.

A dinner may include fish, broccoli, brown rice, chicken breasts, carrots, sweet potatoes and sour cream.

A suitable sample diet for gestational diabetes includes plenty of fluid intake throughout the day. While fruit and vegetable juices are acceptable, it is best not to drink them at once; rather enjoy small amounts at a time with meals and snacks. It is important to drink a lot of water. Water contains no sugar to defeat the objective of keeping glucose amounts intact. A snack before bed is a way to decrease the chances of an overnight hypoglycemic episode.
